The AA has warned that roads across the UK will become “significantly busier” as the school holidays begin, with millions expected to travel both domestically and abroad.
Routes to coastal destinations, ferry ports, airports and tourist attractions are likely to see heavy congestion, especially during key weekends.
Shaun Jones, AA Patrol of the Year, said: “With Scottish schools breaking up earlier than the rest of the UK, we’re likely to see a phased start to the summer getaway.
“That means more families on the move over a longer period, and more chances for congestion to build up – especially around popular holiday hotspots. Planning ahead and staying informed will be key to a smooth and safe journey.”
The AA has identified several “getaway peaks” expected to bring the highest traffic volumes:
– Friday, July 25, to Sunday, July 27: Start of English and Welsh school holidays
– Friday, August 1, to Sunday, August 3: Peak family travel period
– Friday, August 22, to Monday, August 25: Bank Holiday weekend

Major motorways and A-roads – including the M5, M6, M4, A30, A303 and A82 – are expected to experience long delays.
Shaun advised motorists to carry out basic vehicle checks before travelling.
He said: “Spending ten minutes could save you time on your journey by helping to prevent a breakdown.
“Check your tyres – not just for correct pressure and tread depth, but also for their age on any vehicle which hasn’t been used recently. Top up your oil, coolant and screen wash Make sure you’ve got enough fuel or electrical charge if you drive an EV.”
The AA recommends avoiding peak travel hours where possible.
Shaun said: “Leaving early in the morning or later in the evening can make a huge difference to your journey time and stress levels. Build in plenty of breaks to keep everyone refreshed and safe on the road.”
The AA also advises allowing at least 15-minute breaks every two hours and using its Route Planner to find cheaper fuel stops just off the motorway.
