Adventure Island, which is a key fixture along Southend’s seafront, says it remains dedicated to the principles that have guided it since opening – “fairness and freedom” for all.

As part of its milestone celebrations, the seafront attraction has reflected on its legacy, including being honoured with the Queen’s Award for its open and inclusive policies.

The park says those values continue to drive its decisions today, particularly around technology and customer choice.

Bosses at the park have taken a firm stance against the introduction of digital ID cards for staff or job applicants, and pledged to continue accepting cash payments.

Last month, the Government revealed that a new digital ID scheme will to be introduced to help combat illegal working.

Operations director James Miller said: “As Operations Director, it’s important to look ahead and prepare for the future.

“Regarding recruitment, Digital ID cards would be wholly unnecessary. We already use birth certificates, passports, driving licences, and National Insurance numbers, which is more than enough to identify who is who.”

Mr Miller also added that maintaining cash payments is an important part of ensuring access for everyone.

Mr Miller said: “Cash remains vital for those who either don’t understand or simply choose not to engage with technology — and that is their right.

“We believe it’s important to respect that choice.”

James Miller adds that Adventure Island’s continued success lies in looking after both its guests and workforce.

He added: “After 50 years, we’d like to think we have a good idea of what makes a business successful – and that’s looking after the people who make us who we are: our guests and our workforce.”

The park says it looks forward to “50 years more of adventure with fairness and freedom”.
