How the World’s 50 Best Hotels Are Chosen

The World’s 50 Best Hotels list is curated by William Reed, the same organization behind The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and The World’s 50 Best Bars. It reflects the opinions of over 800 global experts, including hoteliers, journalists, travelers, and hospitality professionals.

The Academy is divided into 13 regions, each overseen by an Academy Chair. To maintain fairness, 25% of the panel is renewed each year. Each member votes for seven hotels they have personally stayed in within the last 24 months.

Strict guidelines ensure transparency:

  • All votes are confidential and anonymous.
  • Voters must have stayed at the hotel for at least one night.
  • Complimentary or press stays are accepted if they occurred during the voting period.
  • Voters cannot vote for hotels where they hold a financial or professional interest.
  • Hotels cannot apply or campaign to be listed.

There are no fixed criteria, allowing voters to define “the best” based on design, service, atmosphere, location, or overall guest experience.
