DUBAI- flydubai (FZ) is preparing a major shift in its product strategy as the carrier confirms plans to introduce a three-class configuration on its upcoming fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The airline said the Boeing 787s will feature business, premium economy, and economy cabins.

The announcement was made at the Dubai Airshow, where the airline outlined how the new cabin layout will strengthen its evolving service model and support its long-term network ambitions.

Flydubai has finalized the layout for its wide-body aircraft, creating a product structure that responds to increasing demand for comfort beyond standard economy.

The addition of premium economy places the airline among a limited group of regional carriers offering a dedicated cabin between business and economy.

The strategy reflects a broader shift in the airline’s positioning. Executives emphasized that passenger preferences have changed as Flydubai’s network and fleet capabilities have grown, making the addition of a mid-tier cabin a logical progression.

The decision also follows two major aircraft commitments signed during the airshow, including 150 Airbus A320neos and 75 firm Boeing 737 MAX orders with options for 75 more.

Wide-Body Expansion

The airline will receive its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner in late 2027 as part of a longer-term delivery schedule extending across several years.

While the wide-body jets will form a relatively small part of the overall fleet, Flydubai leadership stated that the aircraft will play a strategic role by enabling access to longer-range destinations.

The Dreamliners are expected to support routes beyond the operational limits of the Boeing 737 family. The expanded range availability will allow the carrier to reach markets previously out of scope, supporting broader international expansion plans.

Executives said the aircraft will help develop new connectivity options, positioning Flydubai more competitively in long-haul segments.

Evolving Business Model

Flydubai’s leadership described the airline’s evolution as gradual rather than abrupt. Over time, the carrier has adopted additional features beyond conventional low-cost models, including the introduction of business class and now premium economy.

The airline noted that traditional low-cost structures are difficult to apply in the Gulf region due to regulatory constraints and limited open-skies arrangements. This has resulted in a hybrid operational model that blends efficiency with added passenger services.
