Turkish authorities sought to calm concerns over images showing trucks and heavy machinery inside Hagia Sophia, asserting the activity was part of careful restoration efforts.

The General Directorate of Foundations said a special access path was created to protect the monument’s marble floors during the work.

The vehicles, including cranes, were used to install four 43.5-meter support columns for a temporary metal structure protecting mosaics inside the dome, part of a second-phase restoration that began in 2023.

Authorities emphasized that all operations followed scientific studies and expert committee decisions, with measures ensuring minimal impact: The reinforced floor system supports up to 30 tons per square meter, while machinery pressure averages only 6 tons.

The restoration also includes updating lead coverings on the main dome and using smoke-absorbing devices to prevent engine fumes from spreading.

Demetrios Athanasoulis, director of the Cyclades Antiquities Ephorate, noted that large-scale restorations inevitably require heavy equipment. 

“The goal is to take all necessary measures after studies to protect the monument’s underlying elements,” he said.
