Picture this: You’ve planned the holiday, booked the flights and packed the outfits. Now, the sun is setting by the azure waters on a remote island, a bonfire casts a warm glow over the rugged landscape amidst the mountains, or the sky is ablaze against the African savannahs—you’ve picked your favourite destination for this moment. Your hands are sweating. The ring box feels heavy. You get down on one knee. As you reach into your pocket, the world seems to stop for a moment. It’s nerve-wracking, exhilarating, and joyous all at once.
From making the right bookings in advance, and striking your best pose to choosing an unforgettable destination, dreaming—and planning—the perfect proposal takes more than just passion. Whether you want to go down on one knee by the water’s edge, deep in the wild or surrounded by majestic mountains, we’ve curated an expert approved guide for a perfect beginning to your forever.
Take The Plunge With The Ocean As Your Backdrop
There’s something magical about proposals unfolding on ivory sands while the golden hour rays of the sun cast a glow over glimmering blue waters. For the couples whose story would be incomplete without the beach as their backdrop, we’re letting you in on some of the best-kept secrets. “I would always suggest keeping it natural and intimate, maybe a barefoot walk on the beach, or a setup that feels inspired by those Maldives moments where everything looks soft, sun kissed, and organic,” says designer and wedding planner, Dakshita Bhatla Gangola, founder of DB And Spaces.
While a beach proposal may appear to be all things magical, it might be wise to consider a few challenges you might face and plan for them beforehand. Beaches—no matter where you are in the world—bring the chance of unpredictable winds, tides and crowds, explains, wedding planner Damini Oberoi, founder of Q Events & Weddings. So, if you’re envisioning décor that seems straight out of a Pinterest mood board, here are a few keep-in-minds. “Beach humidity can affect almost everything, from how makeup sits to how florals behave. Roses droop faster, while tropical blooms like orchids hold up better. I usually avoid heavy fabrics or metallic drapes and go for materials that breathe well so they sway gracefully instead of collapsing. Even candles are placed inside glass votives, so they don’t melt too soon. The idea is to make it look beautiful without fighting the weather,” says Gangola.
Finally, timing is everything. Consult with your planner on tide charts, so that you can mark your spot before it vanishes under the waves. Also, the midday sun can make the sand reach sky-high temperatures, turning the proposal and unpleasant and unromantic experience. And perhaps, most importantly, for those dreamy photographs that make for a scroll-stopping moment, “Time the proposal around the light. Sunrise or sunset brings the softest glow and fewer people,” reveals wedding photographer Shrey Bhagat, founder of Raabta.
Say Yes Amidst Sunsets, Savannah And Safaris
Cue: Can you feel the love tonight from Lion King (1994)
Imagine a sky ablaze in the savannahs of South Africa as you go down on your knee to ask them to choose forever with you, or a pride of lions in Gir watching you as you embark on this adventure of a lifetime. Proposing in the middle of a forest seems right out of a fairy-tale. But they come with their own rhythm and requires careful planning, permissions from the authorities and contingency plans.
“You can’t just drive into the jungle and set up a proposal spot. Every move needs coordination with forest officers and naturalists,” explains Gangola. Before planning the proposal, make sure you’ve secured the right permissions. Another important consideration is to be mindful of your surroundings. “Loud music and harsh lights are a complete no: instead, I prefer soft acoustic music and warm-toned ambient lighting that blends with the surroundings. Every little thing, from the vehicle route to when the lights can stay on, must align with local rules. It’s about letting the wilderness set the mood naturally while keeping everyone safe and comfortable,” says Gangola, “Wildlife properties use scent-free setups because certain perfumes or floral fragrances can attract insects or even animals. Avoid scented candles entirely and focus on visual warmth instead,” she adds.
When you’re in the wild, you do as the inhabitants do—go with the flow. Welcome a sudden drizzle, a cloudy sky, and sometimes even a herd of elephants crossing your path. Know that plans may change, but the proposal will always be a memorable one. “It’s important to have contingency plans, an alternate setup, weather protection, and team coordination for remote locations,” advises Oberoi.
And for the best photos? “Choose spaces where the presence of animals adds to the magic rather than posing a risk,” says Bhagat.
Begin Your Forever With Bonfires, Starlit Skies And Snow-Kissed Mountains

A mountain proposal is as cinematic as it is intimate. Think larger-than-life landscapes, snow-capped peaks, picnic blankets, bonfires and a bottle of bubbly to commemorate the occasion. Yet, behind the serenity is a whole lot of pre-planning, back up plans and of course, love.
One of the most important things to consider while planning a mountain proposal, is the weather. “The temperature can drop sharply after sunset, so we always factor in layers, heating options, and even decor materials that can withstand cold and wind. Lighter elements like candles or petals need protective layering,” says Gangola. Our pro tip? Cuddle up and throw on a few extra layers of your best woollens. For the décor, “Flowers are chosen carefully for durability, and lighting is timed around the golden hour when the mountains glow the most. I love using locally sourced elements like wood, stone, or wool to keep the setup rooted in its setting. It’s all about balancing practicality with poetry,” says Gangola. Also keep in mind that mountainous regions can be difficult to travel to. Trucks and vendors take time to reach high-altitude sites—so you will have to plan everything to the last detail—and the last kilometre. “And my favourite unseen challenge: oxygen and breath. At certain heights, even walking up a slope in heavy outfits feels different. We plan shorter walks for the couple, fewer stairs, and more seated moments, so the proposal feels effortless rather than exhausting,” reveals Gangola.
For a picture-proposal, you’ll also want to choose a location that is accessible, offers incomparable views while yet feeling intimate, warm and romantic. “Scout the area in advance to find a spot that speaks to you,” says Bhagat.
The Ultimate Guide To Making Your Proposal Romantic And Unforgettable

The advice is, perhaps, perfectly summed up by Bhagat when he says, “Romance lies in truth, not perfection. Focus on being present rather than performing. The setting adds poetry, but emotion gives it meaning. The most beautiful proposals are never about grandeur, but about authenticity meeting intention.”
Personalisation is key. You want your proposal to tell your story, reflect your journey and mark you beginning of forever. Don’t get swept up in trends that barely speak to you, or choose destinations that hold little significance to your and your beau. “Infuse details that are meaningful to the couple, a song, a scent, a shared memory, or even subtle design cues from their journey together. I love creating proposals that feel intimate yet cinematic, minimal, but with high emotional resonance,” says Oberoi.
If you’re looking for creative ideas to plan the ultimate proposal, Gangola, suggests creating intimate story pockets leading to your chosen proposal spot. Each pocket reveals different phases of your love story—an adorable way to look back before you look forward together. You can also plan a fun treasure hunt to lead to the final proposal, or curate the experience with your partner’s favourite flowers, sweet treats and more.
But really, at the end of the day, even with all the secrets and pre-planning in the world, no detail matters more than the love you carry, the joy you share, and the smile that starts your forever.
