TRAVELERS are debating a highly contentious question about when it is appropriate to stand up once the plane lands. 

Flyers are arguing about proper plane etiquette and what some consider common courtesy in the air. 

It’s long been debated about whether passengers should stand up once the plane lands, if it means blocking others and encroaching on personal space.

“With long flights, people are anxious to stand up and stretch their legs,” national etiquette expert Diane Gottsman told Fox News Digital. 

“They also want to get their suitcases out of the bins and be prepared to efficiently walk out of their aisle.”

Turbulent behavior happens when passengers cut off rows in front of them from disembarking first, and invade the limited space.

“Moving into the aisle and trying to push is a definite etiquette faux pas,” Gottsman said.

Not only is it an etiquette faux pas, but the behavior could endanger those around them. 

Gottsman noted that it’s “best to remain seated unless there is room to comfortably move about.”

However, the etiquette expert said it’s really the flight attendants who should handle the issue.

The topic sparked major controversy online, specifically on Reddit, where users said they stand for various reasons.

One Reddit user said they like to stand as soon as possible when they have a connecting flight. 

Another seconded Gottsman’s point about leg space, noting that leg cramps lead them to stand early.

Others slammed users who say they stand early, calling them impatient and rude. 

The issue of standing early has become so widespread that Turkey’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation has instructed airline crew members to report passengers who stand before the seat belt sign is turned off.

Reported passengers may face fines.
