DETROIT- A violent passenger on a Delta Air Lines (DL) flight has received an 18-month federal prison sentence after threatening to kill an 80-year-old flight attendant and attempting to interfere with aircraft safety.
The incident occurred on a regional Delta Connection service operated by SkyWest Airlines, prompting an emergency diversion and drawing rare, strict punishment from a federal court.
Delta Passenger Jailed for 18 Months
Mario Nikprelaj, 24, of Shelby Township, Michigan, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release after pleading guilty to interference with flight crew members under 49 U.S.C. § 46504. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The sentence was imposed by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. The U.S. Attorney’s Office confirmed that there is no parole in the federal prison system, meaning the full term must be served.
According to PYOK, the court imposed a harsher penalty than the 12-month sentence requested by federal prosecutors, reflecting the seriousness of the threat and the disruption caused onboard.
Disruptive Behavior Began Before Departure
Court records show that Nikprelaj’s behavior was problematic even before the aircraft left the gate in Omaha on July 17, 2025. He made offensive remarks toward other passengers and initially refused to fasten his seatbelt, violating federal safety regulations. A flight attendant eventually persuaded him to comply.
The flight was operated using a Bombardier CRJ-900 regional jet, also known by its ICAO designator CR9.
Shortly after takeoff, Nikprelaj repeatedly unfastened his seatbelt during the aircraft’s initial ascent, despite multiple instructions from the cabin crew. He then stood up, approached an 80-year-old flight attendant, and poked him in the chest.
When warned that his conduct could lead to law enforcement involvement, Nikprelaj threatened to kill the flight attendant. Crew members attempted to de-escalate the situation and believed the passenger had fallen asleep after returning to his seat.
Attempted Door Interference Triggers Alarm
As cabin service began, Nikprelaj again escalated the situation. While flight attendants had their backs turned, he began manipulating the emergency exit door near his seat.
Other passengers noticed the behavior and repeatedly pressed their call buttons to alert the crew. Flight attendants intervened immediately, at which point Nikprelaj pushed the elderly flight attendant in the chest and repeated his death threats.
Following the renewed aggression, the flight crew declared an emergency and diverted the aircraft to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Local law enforcement was placed on standby to meet the aircraft upon landing.
Nikprelaj’s conduct did not improve during the diversion. He removed his shirt, paced the aisle, attempted to strike nearby passengers who urged him to sit down, and continued making obscene gestures toward the flight attendants.
Drug Discovery and Criminal History
After his arrest, authorities discovered that Nikprelaj had concealed nearly three and a half dozen Xanax pills on his body. Prosecutors also highlighted his extensive criminal record, which includes domestic violence, disorderly conduct, breaking and entering, and assault on a police officer.
In pre-sentencing filings, prosecutors praised the flight attendants for their restraint and professionalism, noting that the fear and disruption caused to passengers and crew were central factors in determining the sentence.
