TOKYO- Japan Airlines (JL) and Canadian partners, including Air Canada (AC) and WestJet (WS), have launched a free regional flight program for Canadian travelers visiting Japan.

The initiative, effective from March 22, 2026 connects major hubs like Tokyo (HND/NRT) and Osaka (KIX) with regional airports such as Nagasaki (NGS), Oita (OIT), and Kochi (KCZ), aiming to boost rural tourism.

Canada–Japan Free Regional Flight Initiative Explained

Japan Airlines has introduced a zero-cost domestic flight program for eligible Canadian travelers. Passengers booking international flights through participating Canadian carriers receive access to complimentary regional routes within Japan.

The program covers airfare on select domestic flights operated by Japan Airlines and its regional affiliates. Travelers can choose from 28 regional airports, enabling access to destinations beyond major cities. Things are managed through a dedicated portal, where eligible users can redeem flights using a unique confirmation code.

Availability excludes peak travel periods such as Golden Week and mid-summer holidays. However, most spring and autumn dates remain open, offering flexibility for off-peak travel planning, Nomad Lawyer reported.

Canadian airlines and tourism authorities have co-funded the program, with an initial investment of $8.2 million. Air Canada and WestJet play a central role in enabling eligibility through international bookings.

Japan’s government estimates the program will generate $340 million in regional tourism spending by 2027. The initiative addresses the imbalance of visitor concentration in cities like Tokyo and Kyoto by distributing tourism across the country.

Prefectural governments are investing in infrastructure improvements to support sustained tourism growth. Enhanced accommodation options and upgraded cultural attractions aim to improve the visitor experience in rural destinations.

Eligibility Criteria and Booking Process

Canadian passport holders qualify automatically when booking international flights through Air Canada, WestJet, or approved partners. Enrollment occurs during the booking process without requiring a separate application.

Participants receive a confirmation email with a unique code to access Japan Airlines’ regional booking platform. Flights must typically be booked at least 30 to 45 days in advance.

Each traveler can book up to two free regional flights per trip. Standard taxes and fees still apply, while airfare costs are fully covered under the program.

Blackout dates apply during peak travel seasons, limiting availability during high-demand periods.
