Authorities on the southern island of Crete have temporarily banned swimming at a popular beach in Hania due to a liquid waste leak.

The decision followed an inspection at the Koum Kapi beach, which is just outside the old town of Hania. Authorities discovered seepage believed to come from a leak in the sewerage system.

The ban will remain in force until water quality is found to have returned to normal.
