Athens International Airport briefly shut down its western runway Saturday and reduced lighting across its facilities from 8.30 to 9.30 p.m. local time, joining WWF’s global Earth Hour initiative.
The airport darkened runway 03L/21R, employee parking areas, and selected infrastructure zones for the one-hour symbolic gesture addressing climate change. Informational announcements ran throughout the main terminal, and the official Earth Hour video screened on terminal displays.
Airport management encouraged all staff to participate individually by dimming or turning off lights at home. Numerous shops in the airport’s commercial park and other airport community members also took part. All scheduled flights operated normally from the eastern runway, airport officials said.
