AUCKLAND- Air New Zealand (NZ) flight NZ81, scheduled to depart Auckland Airport (AKL) for Hong Kong (HKG), experienced a braking system fault while positioning for takeoff on Saturday morning. The aircraft came to a halt on the runway, blocking operations and forcing several inbound international flights to enter holding patterns.

Auckland Airport (AKL) operations have since returned to normal, though some arriving flights faced delays of over 30 minutes.

Air New Zealand confirmed that passengers from the affected aircraft were safely disembarked after it was towed off the runway, RNZ reported.

Air New Zealand Braking System Malfunction Grounds Aircraft

Air New Zealand’s chief risk and safety officer, Nathan McGraw, confirmed the incident involved a technical fault with the braking system with 1News. The aircraft was positioned at the end of the runway for takeoff when the issue occurred. A witness reported visible smoke coming from the aircraft as it taxied before the planned departure.

The airline immediately initiated towing procedures to clear the runway. Passengers on board flight NZ81 were removed from the aircraft once it reached a safe position.

McGraw stated that the airline’s engineering team would assess the aircraft to determine the cause and extent of the braking fault.

Customers booked on the affected flight were reaccommodated on an alternative aircraft to continue their journey to Hong Kong (HKG).

Runway Blockage Triggers Delays

The stalled aircraft on the runway forced Auckland Airport (AKL) to temporarily halt normal landing operations. Several arriving international flights were diverted into holding patterns while ground crews worked to clear the obstruction.

Once the aircraft was towed away, flights resumed landing at the airport. However, the disruption caused a ripple effect across the schedule. Some arrivals were delayed by more than 30 minutes.

An Air New Zealand flight from Christchurch (CHC) to Auckland (AKL), scheduled at 2 pm, was delayed by approximately 40 minutes due to the earlier incident.

Knock-on Effects Felt at Christchurch Airport

The disruption extended beyond Auckland. Christchurch Airport (CHC) experienced congestion at bag drop areas as travellers waited for delayed connecting flights.

Many of these passengers were heading overseas on international connections through Auckland (AKL), and the delays added uncertainty to their travel plans.

Air New Zealand said airport operations across both locations were returning to normal as the day progressed.

A spokesperson for Air New Zealand confirmed that the situation was under control and that the airline prioritized passenger safety throughout the event. Nathan McGraw emphasized the prompt response in towing the aircraft and reaccommodating affected customers.
