Two years after authorities pledged to curb illegal beach operations on Rhodes, violations persist with apparent official tolerance, according to the citizens’ group Ombrella.
The group cited three cases in which businesses vastly exceeded leased beach areas, erected unlicensed structures and blocked public access.
On Elli Beach in Rhodes town, one business with a 704-square meter lease occupies more than 2,100 square meters, including a restaurant, bar and massage area built without permits.
Another nearby venue has large pergolas, bars and hedges that obstruct sea views, covering over 2,000 square meters.
At Anthony Quinn Beach, a lease for 82 square meters has expanded to more than 1,200, with sunbeds even placed in the water.
Ombrella says such practices violate constitutional rights and harm lawful operators.
The state-owned property company ETAD says Rhodes Municipality is responsible for monitoring leases, but it has ordered inspections after learning of the allegations.
