Visitors to the IAA Mobility exhibition in Munich will be able to inspect a 1:1 scale model of the leading car.

Visitors will be offered guided tours of the new train at IAA Mobility in Munich.

THE German state of Bavaria, German Rail (DB), and Siemens Mobility will show a walk-in 1:1 scale model of the new XXL EMU for the Munich S-Bahn for the first time at the IAA Mobility exhibition in Munich from September 9-14.

DB awarded Siemens Mobility a contract worth more than €2bn in 2023 to supply 90 new XXL 13-car S-Bahn trains, with an option for additional trains. The trains will be 202m long and 3m wide, with seating for 480 passengers and total capacity for 1841 passengers. The trains have a maximum power output of 7.8MW and a top speed of 160km/h.

The trains will have time-dependent lighting, more generous seat spacing, USB-C sockets, mobile phone signal-permeable windows, Wi-Fi, and a powerful air-conditioning system designed for outside temperatures up to 45oC.

Five large multi-purpose areas will be provided for wheelchairs, pushchairs, and bicycles, along with 80 automatically locking folding seats. Modern camera technology will help to ensure that the train can be dispatched more quickly at stations.

The trains will have wide, step-free gangways between cars and wheelchair spaces with eye-level displays that provide information on lift status and platform height. Passengers with hearing aids can connect via Bluetooth to hear announcements. Tactile pictograms, Braille signage, acoustic signals, and high-contrast design will be provided for visually impaired passengers.

Siemens says 168 displays will make passenger information completely digital for the first time, from the network map and journey progress to the position of lifts and exits at the next station. Outside, an LED strip in the colour of the respective S-Bahn line will provide quick orientation on the platform.

The S-Bahn trains have a high number of redundant components and are equipped with Siemens’ Railigent X system to maximise train availability.

The trains will be equipped with ETCS and Automatic Train Operation (ATO), as well as a Train Integrity Monitoring System (Tims). DB plans to install ETCS trackside equipment in the Munich area from 2030.

The first trains are scheduled to enter passenger service at the end of 2028.
