Because we’re a state inhabited by practical Midwesterners, you won’t see a lot of things like castles in Minnesota. You’re far more likely to find sprawling log homes or cozy cabins than ramparted stone keeps. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean that Minnesotans don’t occasionally enjoy a little whimsy in their lives. For example, there’s a home near Akeley that is perfectly practical. When it was built, however, the owners added a few whimsical elements to the exterior to make it seem like their own personal palace, including a full apartment in a tower with a balcony. You, too, can entertain your castle fantasies, as the current owners rent out the tower apartment as an Airbnb.
This modern Minnesota castle is located just a few minutes north of the quirky town of Akeley, a community that’s steeped in the lore of Paul Bunyan and, in fact, is home to the world’s largest statue of the big man. Aptly, the castle sits on the southern edge of the Paul Bunyan State Forest—but it’s no lumberjack’s home. Your 800-square-foot, two-story suite includes two bedrooms, one bath, a full kitchen, a living room, and a balcony overlooking a courtyard. A private drive and entrance ensure that your royal peace will not be disturbed.
With the property’s five beds, it can accommodate up to eight people, so you can invite up to seven members of your court to join you on your getaway. Air conditioning, fast wi-fi, and a 51-inch television will ensure that everyone’s comfortable and entertained during your stay.
Of course, with the property’s prime location in Minnesota’s Northwoods, you’re going to want to spend plenty of time outside. You’ll find segments of the Heartland State Trail and the North Country National Scenic Trail just minutes from the home. There are also several ATV and snowmobile trails in the area. You can practically cast a line from the house to reach nearby Eleventh Crow Wing and Big Bass lakes, which offer excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, or paddling. Itasca State Park and La Salle Lake State Recreation Area are fewer than 45 minutes away.
On the other hand, you may just want to stay on the property and relax in your castle’s cozy courtyard. In the evening, nothing really tops a bonfire with your favorite beverage and a little stargazing, which you can enjoy around the property’s fire pit.
What could be better than being the queen or king of your own castle (for a few days, anyway)? There aren’t many castles in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, so it’s always a treat to find one that’s willing to open its gates to guests. For the keys to the realm, head over to Airbnb and take a look at the property’s listing, where you’ll find more information and photos, and you can book your stay.
