Where will your vehicle be taking you this fall and winter? From hockey road trips to the Island to Thanksgiving with family in the Okanagan, families spend a lot of time on the road this time of year.
At the same time, slick streets and shorter days can make getting where we want to be an event in itself, if we’re not prepared.
In addition to a few “just-in-case” road trip essentials, like a stocked emergency kit, blanket and snacks, plus chains if you’re heading into the mountains, making sure your vehicle is ready for the drive is your first step.
After all, the last thing you want is for your trip to be memorable for all the wrong reasons – just ask your friend who got stuck on the Coquihalla waiting for the tow truck last year!
As soon as temperatures hit 7°C, summer or all-season tires become harder, losing their ability to properly grip the road.
So, what are the safe-driving essentials?
First, it’s important to be able to see – and be seen.
“After driving those dusty summer roads, it’s time to top up your windshield washer fluid, ensure your windshield wipers are working well, and walk around your vehicle to make sure your headlights, tail lights and indicators are all in good working order,” notes Mani, manager of Mission Automotive & Tread Pro Tire Centre.
Add the rest of your vehicle’s fluids to the must-check list and get them topped up as needed.
Cold, wet roads mean you can’t stop as quickly as when things are dry, so next on the list is ensuring your brakes are in good shape to handle the journeys ahead, especially if mountain routes are part of your travels.
And don’t wait until the snow hits to switch to your winter tires. As soon as temperatures hit 7°C, summer or all-season tires become harder, losing their ability to properly grip the road. Winter tires are designed specifically for lower temperatures, giving you the added grip you need. In addition, now that fall has arrived, winter tires – or those with M&S ratings – will be required on many B.C. highways.
Beyond the type of tire, tread depth is also important, as is keeping tires properly inflated, and checking for signs of wear, Manu notes.
Tires aren’t the only part of your vehicle affected by cooler temperatures – cold can also be harsh on your vehicle’s battery, so check that it won’t leave you stranded during the first cold snap.
Seasonal maintenance is key to keeping your car running safely year-round, and ensuring issues are caught early before they become bigger – and more expensive – problems.
