Launched yesterday and running until tomorrow, the operator has put three million tickets up for grabs at a price of just £2 for adults and £1 for children.

Early figures show the 10 most popular destinations where the most bargain tickets have been snapped up for so far are:

• Blackpool
• Preston
• York
• Hull
• Carlisle
• Sheffield
• Liverpool
• Newcastle

Tickets purchased in Northern’s Flash Sale are valid for travel between October 6 and October 24.

Alex Hornby, commercial and customer director for Northern, said: “We are just 24 hours in and the response has been incredible.
