Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has said that Pakistan Railways is taking concrete steps to make the system modern, safe, and passenger-friendly.
Speaking to the media after inaugurating the Safe and Smart Railway Station project in Rawalpindi, he said all major stations across the country will soon feature upgraded facilities under the prime minister’s vision to modernize the network.
Rawalpindi has become Pakistan’s first railway station to be upgraded with a comprehensive monitoring and security system. The setup includes 143 surveillance cameras that allow continuous monitoring of the station, reservation offices, and surrounding areas.
Abbasi said the system would not only enhance security but also ensure effective supervision of railway staff.
The minister also inaugurated the station’s new lounges and waiting areas, announcing that similar modern facilities are being built at major stations across the country. The upgraded lounges include separate waiting areas for families and women, tea and refreshment counters, free Wi-Fi, and ATM services.
Abbasi added that older train rakes are being replaced with refurbished models. He noted that three rakes on the Lahore-Rawalpindi route have already been upgraded, with the fourth set to be replaced by mid-November. Faisalabad Station’s renovation has also been completed, while Karachi Cantt’s upgraded terminal will open soon.
