A broken rail on a line in Nottinghamshire has led to “severe delays” to train services across the country.

National Rail said the problem blocked the line between Newark Northgate and Retford earlier on Monday, but added all lines had since reopened.

Despite this, passengers have been warned disruption is expected to last for the rest of the day, with delays of up to 90 minutes on trains between Grantham, Retford and Nottingham – plus cancellations and diversions.

National Rail said affected routes included East Midlands Railway’s service between Norwich and Liverpool Lime Street, as well as Lumo services between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh.

There is also disruption to Grand Central services between London Kings Cross and Bradford Interchange/Sunderland, as well as Hull Trains between Hull and London Kings Cross.

LNER services calling at London Kings Cross and Lincoln, Harrogate, Bradford Forster Square, York, Leeds, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness have also been hit.

National Rail is posting updates on its website as well as sharing a video detailing the disruption.
