The Hellenic Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (ELLET) is warning of potential construction plans on Polyaigos, an uninhabited Aegean islet long protected under strict environmental and planning laws. ELLET urged authorities to reject permits for new building, calling Polyaigos “a unique natural and cultural treasure.”
Documents reviewed by ELLET suggest a 2.7-hectare coastal plot owned by Konsolina SA underwent shoreline mapping, forestry clearance, and an archaeological inspection this spring “in the context of a building request.” The company says it only seeks to restore an existing house “for private use, not tourism,” according to Gerasimos Pantazatos, Konsolina president and CEO of Aria Hotels, part of the Libra Group.
Nearly all of Polyaigos’ 1,770.3 hectares belong to a foundation established by Ioannis Stavris Logothetis’ will, which limits land use to grazing. Protected since 2000 and part of the Natura 2000 network, the island faces calls to be declared an archaeological site.
