Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) has announced an ambitious new plan that will shape the way the airport grows over the next decade. The airport wants to improve the experience for travelers, make the airport quieter and cleaner, and prepare for the future. The upgrades are part of a long-term vision that focuses on two key ideas: quality and balance.
According to Schiphol, the airport has been an important gateway for the Netherlands for more than 100 years. Now, the goal is to keep that role strong. The plan includes major construction projects, sustainability programs, better working conditions, and clearer cooperation with partners in aviation.

Amsterdam €10 Billion Investment Program
Schiphol plans to invest €10 billion by 2035. This spending will support new infrastructure, modern buildings, and upgrades designed to reduce noise and emissions.
A large part of the budget will go toward a new terminal, improvements to multiple piers, and other major renovations. Schiphol says that these steps are necessary to make travel more comfortable and to allow airlines to use larger, quieter, and cleaner aircraft.
The airport also hopes that these improvements will help it return to the top three hub airports in Europe. Achieving that goal means balancing the needs of travelers, employees, airlines, and local communities.

Better Working Conditions for Airport Staff
Schiphol is also focusing on the people who work at the airport. New technology and smarter systems will be introduced to make jobs easier and healthier. This includes:
- Baggage robots
- Underground systems to move suitcases and cargo more efficiently
- Measures to reduce exposure to ultrafine particles
These changes are meant to create a safer and more supportive workplace for thousands of employees.

Renovations to Improve Space and Comfort
The airport says that many parts of the current terminal are no longer suitable for today’s number of travelers. The new plan calls for better layouts, more open areas, and major upgrades.
Key Projects Planned
- New Terminal South
A modern, spacious terminal designed with light, open areas and a calm atmosphere. This building will keep Schiphol’s “one terminal” concept, meaning everything stays connected and within walking distance. - Pier Renovations
After opening Pier A in 2027, Schiphol will renovate Piers B, C, D, and H/M. The goal is to replace older parts of the airport with improved, energy-efficient spaces and create room for bigger and quieter aircraft. - Improved Traveler Areas
More space, better seating, renovated lounges, and updated shops and restaurants. Lounge 1 is already an example of how the airport wants future spaces to look: modern, open, and comfortable. - Better Accessibility
Schiphol is working on road improvements and public transport options. There are also plans for a new metro line connecting Amsterdam, Schiphol, and Hoofddorp. This should make it easier for workers and travelers to reach the airport.
Schiphol is now discussing the timing and costs of these projects with airlines and industry partners.

Major Push for Sustainability
Schiphol aims to cut 90% of emissions from ground activities by 2030 compared to 2019. The airport plans to do this by:
- Using less gas
- Expanding electric transportation
- Constructing new buildings with advanced sustainability standards
The Dutch government also wants aircraft emissions at Schiphol to go back to 2005 levels by 2030, which includes blending more sustainable aviation fuel. Schiphol currently blends at least 2% sustainable fuel and is working with international partners to accelerate progress.
On the ground, the airport is reducing emissions by electrifying vehicles and providing power and air-conditioning to parked aircraft so engines can stay off. Schiphol has also purchased four electric TaxiBots, which tow aircraft to and from runways without using jet engines.

Bottom Line
Schiphol Group’s new strategic plan for the next decade is built on six major goals:
- Returning to the top three European hub airports
- Improving balance with local communities
- Better working conditions
- Developing regional airports
- Strengthening international cooperation
- Ensuring financial stability
These efforts together outline how the airport wants to grow responsibly while supporting the Dutch economy.
