El Al canceled all scheduled flights on Sunday until April 18, following the Transportation Ministry’s decision to extend restrictions on the number of passengers and flights permitted to depart from Israel via Ben-Gurion Airport.
“Following a decision by the state authorities, an emergency flight schedule is currently in effect. This schedule includes flights to a limited number of gateways and a restriction on the number of passengers on each flight departing Israel,” the company said in a statement.
The statement also clarified that El Al will operate flights only to New York (JFK and EWR), Los Angeles, Miami, Bangkok, London, Paris, Rome, and Athens, and that new tickets will be required to board these flights.
The airline also added that, due to the Transportation Ministry’s 100-passenger limit in all flights departing from Israel, “passengers awaiting assignment are being accommodated based on priority according to the original ticket issue date.”
“Priority is given to exceptional humanitarian medical cases,” the company explained.
“Customers whose flights were canceled due to the security situation are entitled to a refund or a credit voucher,” El Al said.
Also on Sunday, the Transportation Ministry approved flights to start departing from Ben-Gurion Airport with up to 100 passengers.
This represents an increase in the 80-passenger limit per flight, established in light of the current war with Iran and the potential security risks of operating full flights.
Additionally, the ministry will allow two flights to depart per hour, up from one, according to reports.
The ministry had already lifted restrictions imposed during the holiday season, which lowered the number of passengers to 50, with the new policy expected to become a trend towards more relaxed flight restrictions.
