Traffic jams are snarling entry to and exit from Athens’ Attiki Odos ring road after a key airport-bound section was shut for emergency tunnel maintenance.
The closure affects the lanes toward the airport between the Aspropyrgos interchange and the Fyli Avenue junction and will remain in place through Sunday, February 22, triggering major detours and long delays for commuters and freight traffic.
Diverted vehicles are being funneled onto Athinon Avenue, where congestion has worsened, particularly during rush hour. Entrances to the toll road from Elefsina through the Aigaleo ring road are also closed.
Drivers heading downtown are being routed via Athinon Avenue, while traffic bound for Lamia must continue to Kifissos Avenue before turning north.
Airport-bound motorists face a long loop via Athinon Avenue and Kifissos, rejoining Attiki Odos at the Metamorfosi interchange. Motorists planning to catch a flight from the airport are, therefore, advised to use an alternative route or plan for a longer drive.
