VIENNA- Austrian Airlines (OS) has reported measurable fuel efficiency gains after deploying an aerodynamic surface film on its Boeing 777-200ER fleet. The innovation, designed to reduce drag, has delivered tangible operational and environmental benefits over 12 months.
Operating primarily from Vienna International Airport (VIE), the airline has applied the AeroShark film to four of its long-haul aircraft. The Boeing 777-200ER fleet modification reflects a broader push toward sustainable aviation technologies and improved fuel efficiency.

Austrian Airlines 777 AeroShark Film
Austrian Airlines confirmed that the AeroShark film reduced aerodynamic drag by 0.7 percent across its modified aircraft. While the percentage appears modest, the operational impact has been significant over time.
The airline recorded a total fuel saving of approximately 930 tonnes during the first year of operation. This efficiency gain directly translated into a reduction of around 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
These results validate earlier projections and demonstrate the value of incremental aerodynamic improvements. The airline emphasized that even small reductions in drag can yield substantial savings when applied across long-haul operations.

AeroShark Technology
The AeroShark film, developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, uses microscopic riblet structures inspired by shark skin. These riblets optimize airflow over the aircraft’s fuselage and engine nacelles, reducing friction during flight.
Each Boeing 777 in the Austrian fleet uses around 830 square meters of this specialized coating. According to Flight Global, the film was applied to aircraft registered OE-LPA, OE-LPB, OE-LPC, and OE-LPD over three months ending in March 2025.
Following certification approval by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, Austrian began commercial operations with the modified aircraft. Performance assessments over the past year confirmed fuel burn reductions ranging between 0.7 and 0.9 percent.

Sustainability Impact of Aeroshark
The environmental benefits of the AeroShark technology extend beyond fuel savings. Austrian Airlines noted that the reduction in carbon emissions is equivalent to approximately 20 transatlantic flights.
This achievement highlights the growing importance of sustainable innovations in aviation. Airlines are increasingly investing in technologies that deliver both economic and environmental advantages.
Austrian’s leadership stated that the investment in AeroShark has proven effective in real-world conditions. The airline plans to continue evaluating such technologies as part of its long-term sustainability strategy.
The success of this initiative also reflects a wider industry trend toward optimizing aircraft performance. As fuel costs remain a critical factor, efficiency improvements like AeroShark are expected to gain wider adoption across global fleets.
