£231M renovation plan approved for london’s brutalist icon

London’s unmistakable Brutalist colossus, the Barbican Centre, secures planning approval for a £231 million renewal program. The building is set to to pause its regular operations and close its doors for a full year beginning in June 2028 as part of an ambitious renovation program, led by Allies and Morrison, Asif Khan Studio, and Buro Happold.

The Barbican, a Grade II-listed cultural powerhouse designed by Chamberlin, Powell & Bon and built between 1965 and 1982, has since stood as an iconic mixed-use development with residential, recreational, and cultural facilities. It houses one of Europe’s most celebrated multi-arts portfolios, including the Barbican Art Gallery, Curve, Level 2 Gallery, a world-class concert hall, theatre spaces, cinemas, and the much-loved Conservatory.

the year-long ‘barbican renewal programme’

Nearly forty-five years after the centre’s opening, wear and aging infrastructure have begun to show, prompting a renovation dubbed the Barbican Renewal Programme. Led by Asif Khan Studio, Allies and Morrison, and Buro Happold, the extensive overhaul aims at securing the center’s future for decades to come. The City of London Corporation has formally approved the plans, committing £191 million toward the £231 million first phase of the project. Developed in close collaboration with heritage bodies including Historic England and the Twentieth Century Society, the approved scheme follows a conservation-led approach that preserves the architectural character of the Brutalist landmark.

The project will see key public spaces — from the dramatic foyers and lakeside terrace to the landmark Conservatory — restored and reimagined, while vital infrastructure is modernized to meet contemporary standards of accessibility, sustainability, and creative flexibility. Within the Conservatory, the renewal will address long-standing maintenance and accessibility challenges while introducing a climate-controlled environment designed to protect its more than 1,500 plant species. A new lift and stair will provide access to the Conservatory’s raised balconies, opening up new perspectives across the lush interior landscape.

Elements such as Conservatory glass and existing paving materials will be reused, reducing environmental impact while preserving the architectural integrity of the Grade II-listed complex. The redesign will also enable more flexible use of public spaces, expanding opportunities for creative programming, learning initiatives, and community engagement.

the renovation: What Will Close and What Will Remain Open

Major on-site works are scheduled to begin in 2027, with the most intensive phase of construction taking place during the center’s temporary closure. The shutdown will run from the end of June 2028 until summer 2029, allowing large-scale upgrades to be completed safely and efficiently. During this period, most Barbican spaces and programming will pause.

However, the Barbican cinemas on Beech Street will remain open, and the surrounding residential estate will continue to operate as normal. The institution will also collaborate with partner organizations, including the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Shakespeare Company, to maintain cultural activity across London while work is underway. The renewal arrives as the Barbican approaches its fiftieth anniversary in 2032.
