Thinking about one last road trip before winter rolls in? You’re not alone. Searches for “autumn road trip” have surged 5,000% in the past week, as travelers across Europe (and beyond) look to soak in fall foliage, charming villages, and crisp countryside air. It’s no wonder, as the global autumn travel market is now worth a whopping $14.2 billion, up 7% from last year.
To help road-trippers choose their perfect route, travel experts from VignetteSwitzerland.com analyzed data from the European Commission, UNESCO, and the UN to rank the 10 best countries in Europe for autumn road trips. The study factored in everything from fuel prices and road safety to national parks, attractions, and hotel availability.
Topping the list is Spain, with a score of 75.08 out of 100. The country combines smooth highways, affordable diesel (€1.43 per litre), and stunning scenery, from Andalusia’s olive groves to Catalonia’s coastal cliffs. Travelers can explore Madrid’s golden parks, the Alhambra in Granada, or the vineyards of La Rioja without breaking the bank.
In second place, Croatia scores 70.61, offering some of Europe’s most scenic drives. Think Plitvice Lakes National Park, Dubrovnik’s coastal roads, and Krka’s waterfalls. It also boasts one of the highest densities of national parks in Europe.
Austria takes third with 69.97 points, thanks to its postcard-perfect Alpine roads and charming pit stops. Expect Innsbruck’s snow-dusted peaks, Vienna’s baroque streets, and plenty of cozy lodges along the way.
“When planning a road trip, travelers often think about where to go, but not always how well a country’s infrastructure supports that experience,” says Mattijs Wijnmalen, CEO of VignetteSwitzerland.com. “This study helps travelers find destinations that balance adventure with comfort on the road.”
