MANILA— Hong Kong’s flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways (CX) has launched an internal investigation after one of its aircraft used an incorrect taxiway at Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL), an incident that briefly disrupted airport operations and delayed other flights.
The event involved Cathay Pacific flight CX918 operating from Manila to Hong Kong, which made a taxiing error during departure procedures. The airline confirmed that it is cooperating with Philippine aviation authorities to determine the cause and contributing factors behind the incident.

Cathay Pacific 777 Wrong Turn
According to the airline, the taxiway deviation occurred during ground movement before takeoff. Air traffic controllers acted promptly to manage traffic flow and prevent runway congestion, ensuring separation between aircraft.
Manila ATC temporarily delayed two arriving flights to maintain operational safety. Once the situation was resolved, controllers cleared CX918 for departure, allowing normal runway operations to resume.
Cathay Pacific emphasized that at no point was passenger or crew safety compromised. The airline confirmed that a full internal review is underway, covering flight crew procedures, airport signage, and coordination with air traffic services.

Safety Oversight Response
The airline said it is working closely with relevant aviation authorities as part of the investigation. Standard operating procedures require strict compliance with taxi instructions, particularly at complex or congested airports.
Aviation experts note that taxiway deviations, while rare, can occur at large international hubs with intersecting runways and construction activity.
Proper coordination between pilots and air traffic controllers remains critical in preventing runway incursions.
Cathay Pacific reiterated its commitment to safety and operational discipline. The airline stated that findings from the investigation will be used to reinforce training and operational guidance where necessary.

Operational Changes at Manila
The incident comes as Manila Ninoy Aquino International Airport continues to undergo operational changes following its privatization in September last year.
A consortium led by San Miguel Corporation assumed control of the airport with a pledged investment of about $3 billion to modernize facilities and improve performance.
The airport has faced past operational challenges, including runway congestion and air traffic management issues.
In November, a separate incident involved a Gulf Air Boeing 787 mistakenly entering an active runway, forcing an arriving aircraft to perform a go-around.
Industry observers say ongoing infrastructure upgrades and clearer ground movement systems will be essential as Manila handles rising traffic volumes. Enhanced signage, improved taxiway layouts, and advanced surface movement guidance systems are expected to reduce future risks.

Bottom Line
Cathay Pacific’s investigation into the Manila taxiway incident underscores the importance of precise ground operations at busy international airports.
While no safety risk emerged, the event highlights the need for continuous coordination between airlines and airport authorities as traffic levels increase.
