SALT LAKE CITY- Delta Air Lines (DL) gate agent Nat at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) turned a routine boarding process into an unexpected public contest, offering two empty first class seats to passengers willing to breakdance for the upgrade. The incident, which took place at Gate A31, quickly went viral after being posted on Instagram.

The main cabin on the flight was oversold, and the standard upgrade list had already been exhausted. With no formal process left to follow, the gate agent made a call that passengers at the gate will not soon forget, View from the Wing reported.

Delta Agents Unique Contest for Empty Seats

An agent announced to the waiting passengers, “I’m in need of two passengers to be seated in first class. Anyone willing to do a little break dance to be seated in first class? Anyone?” Two volunteers stepped forward.

The contestants showcased moves reminiscent of popping and locking, with one participant shifting into what appeared to be Russian folk dancing.

As the two hopefuls performed, the rest of the gate responded with laughter, applause, and cheers. At the end of the short competition, Nat announced them as her “breakdance winners,” and both passengers headed to their first class seats.

The Instagram video of the event racked up over 2 million views. She later clarified in a caption on the video: “Not ur typical gate agent, I’m a fun gate agent. No upgrades on the list, main cabin oversold. Did complementary upgrades into Comfort+ but also had to do some into 1st class. Thought it was a fun idea to get a free upgrade to 1st!”

How Delta’s Upgrade System Is Supposed to Work

Delta Air Lines uses a structured, multi-tier upgrade clearance system for SkyMiles Medallion members. Several factors determine upgrade priority: SkyMiles Medallion elite status, Million Miler status, cabin purchased, eligible Delta American Express card membership, corporate traveler designation, and the date and time of the upgrade request, which serves as a final tiebreaker.

Pending upgrade requests are automatically added to the airport standby list if they do not clear during the check-in window, giving passengers one final chance at the gate before boarding.

Delta does not publish upgrade availability or allow third-party access to most upgrade information, making its process more opaque than many other U.S. carriers.

Why Empty First Class Seats Are Increasingly Rare

Free upgrades to Delta first class are far less common today than they were a decade ago. Only about 12% of Delta first class seats go to complimentary upgrades today, compared to 81% roughly 15 years ago.

Delta actively sells upgrade offers for as little as $26 on short domestic flights, reducing the number of seats ever made available through the complimentary upgrade queue.

Even for Medallion members, upgrades that do not clear in advance are not guaranteed to come through at the gate, particularly on high-demand routes. This makes the situation at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) genuinely uncommon: an exhausted upgrade list combined with an oversold coach cabin left the gate agent with no standard path forward.

Passenger and Public Reaction

The video generated a largely positive response online. One viewer wrote, “I’m the shyest person alive, and I would do this in a heartbeat,” while another said she was manifesting it as an option on her next flight. A third commenter credited the airline’s culture, writing, “This is why I only fly Delta.”

Not all reactions were celebratory. Some frequent flyers and aviation observers raised concerns about the fairness of bypassing the formal upgrade process entirely, even when the list is technically exhausted.

Industry analysts have also pointed out that the informal, personality-driven approach to upgrades does little to reinforce loyalty among high-status travelers who follow the system and still miss out.

This Is Not the First Time Delta Has Done This

This is not entirely without precedent for Delta. Around three and a half years prior, a Delta gate agent held a similar dance-off for an upgrade into Delta Comfort+ (DL’s extra-legroom economy product), though that incident did not receive the same level of media attention.

The Salt Lake City (SLC) breakdance contest stands out because it involved actual first class seats, which carry a significantly higher value and normally follow a strict protocol.
