The operators of Dollywood, the super-popular Tennessee amusement park co-owned by country superstar Dolly Parton, have closed two of their amusement parks.
Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation announced they are closing Malibu Norcross and Mountasia, both located in Georgia, Mens Journal reported.
Malibu Norcross, which offered go-karts, miniature golf, water play area, arcade and bumper boats, closed Sept. 28, according to an announcement on its website.
“Thank you to our incredible community, hosts, and guests for making Malibu Norcross a place to create timeless memories for more than 20 years,” the website of the Norcross-Georgia park said.
The same announcement was posted on the Mountasia Marietta site. The Marietta facility had go-karts, three mini golf courses and a large arcade.
“These centers have played an important role in their communities, and we’re incredibly grateful to the hosts who’ve created so many joyful memories for families,” CEO Andrew Wexler said in a statement to WSB-TV. “This decision is in no way a reflection on the hosts or the quality of the experiences offered, but rather a recognition that Family Entertainment Centers operate differently than the types of attractions we are best structured to support.”
Insidethemagic.com reported Herschend purchased 20 U.S. parks across 10 states, including the Georgia facilities, earlier this year from European theme park Parques Reunidos. It had already sold three of those properties – Raging Waters Los Angeles in San Dimas, Calif., Castle Park in Riverside, Calif., and Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe in Greensboro, North Carolina – to Lucky Strike Entertainment.
The theme park now known as Dollywood started when Herschend purchased Goldrush Junction, a small theme park in Pigeon Forge in 1976. Parton became co-owner in 1986 and it was renamed in honor.
Herschend and Parton also own Dolly Parton’s Stampede and Dollywood’s Splash Country.
