Heavy snow and strong winds hit large parts of Japan on Jan. 11, forcing major airlines to cancel dozens of domestic flights and affecting thousands of passengers.

Japan Airlines said it had canceled 58 domestic flights as of 8 p.m. local time, disrupting travel plans for nearly 2,000 passengers. Routes impacted included services between Osaka Itami and Tajima, The Straits Times reported.

All Nippon Airways reported 43 domestic flight cancellations as of 6 p.m., affecting around 2,800 passengers. Disrupted routes included flights between Haneda and Tottori, as well as Toyama and Haneda, Japan News reported.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, severe winter weather is expected to continue in many areas on Jan. 12, with heavy snowfall and strong winds likely to cause further transport disruptions.

Authorities have urged travelers to monitor flight updates closely as conditions remain volatile.
