DUBAI- Emirates (EK) will reconfigure its 615-seat Airbus A380 aircraft, currently the highest capacity commercial passenger jets in service. The retrofit reduces total capacity to 569 seats and introduces a new 56-seat premium economy cabin.

These aircraft operate from Dubai International Airport (DXB) and are part of a 15-aircraft high density subfleet within Emirates’ fleet of well over 100 Airbus A380s. The changes will begin in the coming months, with the first reconfigured aircraft entering service this spring.

Emirates Reshapes Its Highest Capacity A380 Fleet

Emirates (EK) maintains a fleet of over 100 Airbus A380s, where a vast majority include first class.

The 15 without first class target routes with limited premium demand but feature the world’s highest capacity at 615 seats:

  • 58 business class seats
  • 557 economy class seats
  • 615 total seats

The airline rolls out premium economy throughout its entire A380 fleet as part of this aggressive project. Reconfiguration of high-density A380s begins in coming months, with planes re-entering service this spring. Capacity drops 8%, from 615 to 569 seats.

  • 76 business class seats, an increase of 18 seats
  • 56 premium economy seats, newly introduced
  • 437 economy class seats, a reduction of 120 seats

Business class grows from 58 to 76 seats, aligning with all Emirates A380s, including those with first class. These 76 seats occupy the middle and back of the upper deck fleet-wide.

Premium economy introduces 56 seats in the front upper deck space, replacing what is typically 14 first class seats on other A380s.

Economy reduces from 557 to 437 seats. The old layout placed business class at the upper deck’s back, front upper deck with 120 economy seats, and lower deck with 437 economy seats.

Post-retrofit, the upper deck dedicates entirely to premium seating, while the lower deck keeps 437 economy seats unchanged.

According to OMAAT, this standardizes the fleet and reflects evolved travel patterns.

Standardizing Business Class on A380

A key objective of the retrofit is cabin consistency. After reconfiguration, every Emirates A380 will feature 76 business class seats. This matches the business class capacity on 4 cabin A380s that include first class.

All business class seats will be positioned in the middle and rear sections of the upper deck. The previous split layout with economy seats at the front of the upper deck will be eliminated.

This standardization simplifies fleet planning, improves operational alignment, and ensures a consistent premium experience across the A380 fleet.

Premium Economy Moves to the Upper Deck

The 56-seat premium economy cabin will be installed at the front of the upper deck. On four-cabin A380 aircraft, this space typically accommodates 14 first class suites.

Premium economy on these high density A380s will feature a 2-3-2 seating layout. On four-cabin A380s, premium economy is located at the front of the lower deck in a 2-4-2 layout.

The upper deck location offers a quieter and more exclusive environment. This positioning enhances product appeal and strengthens differentiation between economy and business class.

Reflecting Evolving Travel Demand

Premium travel demand has increased globally over the years. Airlines have adjusted cabin configurations to capture higher yielding segments while maintaining operational efficiency.

The high density A380s were originally optimized for maximum economy capacity. After many years in service, Emirates is restructuring these aircraft to reflect current demand patterns.

Reducing economy seats while expanding business class and introducing premium economy supports improved revenue per flight. It also aligns these aircraft with broader fleet standards.
