Each week, airlines submit schedule changes to Cirium Diio, OAG, etc. In the latest update, Emirates revealed an equipment swap for Seattle. During the upcoming summer, it’ll now fly the smaller Boeing 777-200LR there, instead of the larger 777-300ER.

The equipment swap means Dubai-Seattle is Emirates’ new longest nonstop 200LR-operated route, overtaking the fifth freedom service between Barcelona and Mexico City. Moreover, it means Seattle will lose first-class cabins, while overall summer seats for sale have been reduced by 8%. It comes as Emirates adds another weekly 777-300ER service to Orlando. The airline has not yet added any new US routes for 2026.

The Gulf giant’s frequency to Seattle varies. Between January and March, flights primarily run six times weekly, down from daily in the same period in 2025. However, the frequency will return to daily during the summer. The carrier is currently using the 328-seat, first-class-equipped 300ER to Washington State. It was to continue flying the high-capacity equipment through the rest of 2026.

The plan has now changed. The latest information is that the 300ER will run until March 28. That’s the final day of the northern aviation winter, based on IATA slot seasons. Beginning on March 29, the 302-seat 200LR will take over. While the plan might change again, especially for next winter, the ultra-long-range 200LR is currently scheduled through the end of 2026 at the earliest.

The northern aviation summer will run from March 29 to October 24 this year, based on IATA slot seasons. In this period, Emirates will now provide 126,840 round-trip seats to/from Seattle, down 8% from the 137,600 previously planned. First class will no longer be available, with 3,360 seats removed. But it is not as dramatic as it seems. According to Cirium, first class wasn’t available from the route’s launch in March 2012 until during the pandemic.

Emirates Has Served Seattle Since March 2012

Nearly 14 years have passed since Emirates’ debut in Seattle. It has always used the 200LR or 300ER on the long route. Cirium indicates that the 200LR was deployed between 2012 and 2018, and returned in 2021. Thus, the downgauge to Emirates’ lowest-capacity Triple Seven is notable.

Between 2012 and 2026, Emirates scheduled 1,284 departures to Seattle on the 200LR. In the 14-year period, the carrier has used the 200LR to 146 airports from Dubai. Of these, Seattle is the 13th most-served 200LR market, behind Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Barcelona, Mexico City, Dallas, Tehran, Tokyo Haneda, Karachi, Rio de Janeiro, Kochi, Buenos Aires, and Perth.

For the most part, Emirates has served Seattle daily. However, for a brief period between 2015 and 2017, two daily flights were available. In January 2016, for example, flights arrived in Seattle at 6:55 am and 12:55 pm and departed at 9:40 am and 5:40 pm.

Predictably, the double daily frequency meant a big reduction in load factor. According to the US Department of Transportation, the airline filled 92% of Seattle seats in January 2015, which fell to just 74% in January 2016. The substantial reduction was, of course, because the additional seats far outstripped the extra traffic. Turkish Airlines recently experienced this on its Los Angeles route recently.

The US DOT data for January-September 2025 indicates that Emirates carried 141,200 round-trip Seattle passengers. Shockingly, the source indicates that it only filled 73% of the available seats, which is, of course, exceptionally low. Five months had loads of between 62% and 70%. The best month was July, with 83%. No wonder the airline reduced its winter frequency and its downgauging to the 200LR.

Booking data suggests that about three-quarters of passengers connected to another flight in Dubai. Perhaps needless to say, India was overwhelmingly the largest market, with more than two-thirds of the total connecting traffic. The ten most popular segments were Seattle-Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Ahmedabad, Johannesburg, and Kochi.
