Universal Epic Universe visitors are already laying flowers at a grave marker in the monster themed land of the new Florida theme park in a touching tribute to movie history and the little girl accidentally drowned by the Frankenstein monster in the original 1931 film.

The $7 billion Universal Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, Florida, officially debuted in late May with more than 50 rides, attractions, shows and experiences.

Universal Creative Art Director Brandon Kleyla added the statue of a little girl gathering flowers near the entrance of the Dark Universe themed land as an Easter Egg for die-hard fans of classic Universal Monsters films of the 1930s and ‘40s.

“Four years ago I found this statue and immediately knew it had to become the grave marker for little Maria,” Kleyla wrote on Instagram.

The flower-gathering Maria drowns after she befriends the Frankenstein monster, who misunderstands a game and throws her into the water. The controversial and disturbing scene was censored for decades until Universal restored the film in the 1980s.

Kleyla was the prop manager responsible for telling the visual story of Dark Universe before becoming art director of the Universal Monsters themed land.

“Sitting in meetings, I always said that if the guests understand what we’re trying to do, there will be flowers on her grave on day one,” Kleyla wrote on Instagram.

Kleyla was filled with “overwhelming emotion” when he spotted a flower at Maria’s grave marker on opening day of Universal Epic Universe.

“Whoever you are, whoever went as far as bringing a flower for Maria’s grave on opening day, thank you,” Kleyla wrote on Instagram.

Flowers were also left at the Maria statue during Epic Universe previews, according to comments on the post.

“It’s unclear just how long this has been going on, but it’s quite touching that so many people are already bringing flowers to the grave,” according to Cinema Blend. “This sweet situation is a testament to the love that fans already seem to have for Dark Universe.”
