Etihad A380 Makes Unscheduled Stop in Munich

Flight EY21 departed Abu Dhabi on its regular westbound route toward Toronto. The aircraft, carrying the callsign ETD7MF, deviated from its planned transatlantic path and landed at Munich Airport.

Flightradar24 tracking data showed the aircraft on the ground at MUC with a barometric altitude of 0 feet and a ground speed of 0 knots, confirming a full stop after landing.

The exact cause of the diversion has been officially confirmed by Etihad Airways to passengers as a medical emergency.

Munich Airport, with its two parallel runways and full Category III capabilities, is a designated alternate for many European and transatlantic flights and can accommodate Airbus A380 operations.

The aircraft involved, A6-APH, is an Airbus A380-861 with construction number 199. It is one of eight active A380s in Etihad’s current fleet. A ninth aircraft remains stored, while the airline’s first A380 (A6-APA) was permanently retired and scrapped.

Why an Etihad A380 at Munich is a Rare Sight

Etihad Airways operates daily scheduled service between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Munich (MUC) using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline deploys up to two daily frequencies on this route, with schedule filings showing 13 weekly flights during May 2026. None of these flights uses the Airbus A380.

In 2026, Etihad schedules its A380 fleet exclusively to five destinations from Abu Dhabi: London Heathrow (LHR), Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Singapore Changi (SIN), and Tokyo Narita (NRT).

Tokyo Narita joins the A380 network starting June 17, 2026, marking the type’s first deployment to Japan. Munich is not among the scheduled A380 destinations, which makes this diversion an exceptionally uncommon event for aviation enthusiasts and planespotters at the airport.

Munich Airport regularly receives Airbus A380 traffic from Lufthansa and Emirates. However, an Etihad A380 parked at Munich is a sight reserved almost exclusively for diversion scenarios.

Etihad’s Airbus A380 Fleet and Configuration

Etihad currently operates eight Airbus A380-861 aircraft, each configured with 486 seats across four cabin products. The layout includes two The Residence suites, nine First Class Apartments in a 2-2 layout, 70 Business Class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, and 405 Economy Class seats in a 3-4-3 arrangement.

The Residence remains one of the most exclusive airline products in commercial aviation, offering a private living room, bedroom with a double bed, and an ensuite shower.

The airline plans up to seven daily A380 departures from Abu Dhabi starting June 17, 2026. This level of A380 deployment matches figures last seen in early 2020, before the pandemic reshaped global aviation operations.

For 2026, Etihad has scheduled 2,104 Airbus A380 departures from its Abu Dhabi hub, its fourth-highest annual total on the type.
