NADI- Fiji Airways (FJ) has announced the discontinuation of its nonstop service between Nadi (NAN) and Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) effective September 7, 2026.
The route, which launched in December 2024 as the airline’s longest sector at 6,625 miles, will be replaced by increased capacity on existing North American and Asian routes.
The carrier attributes the decision to rising fuel costs and shifting demand patterns. Fiji Airways (FJ) plans to redeploy its aircraft by upgrading select Vancouver (YVR) services from the Airbus A330 to the A350 and boosting frequencies to Hong Kong (HKG), while maintaining 11 weekly flights to the United States through Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO).
Fiji Airways Cancels Dallas Flights
Fiji Airways (FJ) launched the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) route with a clear strategic rationale. The airline joined the oneworld alliance and deepened its partnership with American Airlines (AA), including the adoption of AAdvantage as its frequent flyer program.
Dallas, as American Airlines’ largest hub, offered one-stop connectivity to hundreds of smaller U.S. cities that lack direct links to the West Coast.
However, the route faced fundamental economic challenges. The Dallas sector runs approximately 1,000 miles longer than the airline’s existing Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) flights. Longer flights mean higher fuel burn, extended crew duty hours, and greater aircraft utilization costs.
Airlines typically need to charge a fare premium on longer routes to offset these incremental expenses, and Fiji Airways (FJ) appears to have struggled to command that premium on the DFW service.
Travel to Fiji from the United States remains a niche market. The majority of American travelers heading to the South Pacific originate from major coastal cities, which already enjoy strong connectivity through LAX and SFO. The theoretical advantage of Dallas as a connecting hub did not translate into sufficient passenger volumes to justify the additional operating costs.
Fiji Airways Redirects Capacity To Stronger Markets
Rather than simply reducing its network, Fiji Airways is reallocating the freed-up aircraft capacity to routes with stronger demand profiles.
The airline will upgrade select Vancouver (YVR) flights from the smaller Airbus A330 to the widebody A350, offering more seats and an improved passenger experience on the Canadian route.
Frequencies to Hong Kong (HKG) will also increase, reflecting growing demand on the Asian corridor. These moves signal that the airline sees better returns in its existing markets than in the experimental Dallas service.
Fiji Airways (FJ) will continue to operate 11 weekly frequencies to the United States, split between Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO). Passengers holding bookings on the cancelled Dallas route will be rerouted through these two gateways.
Route Officially Suspended But Unlikely To Return
Fiji Airways (FJ) has classified the Dallas route as a suspension rather than a permanent cancellation. However, the combination of unfavorable economics and limited demand makes a return highly unlikely.
The airline’s own statement emphasized a focus on routes with “the strongest and most sustainable demand,” a clear indication that Dallas did not meet that threshold.
The cancellation also highlights a broader reality for smaller carriers entering competitive U.S. markets. Hub connectivity alone does not guarantee route viability, especially when the origin-destination demand is insufficient to fill widebody aircraft on ultra-long-haul sectors, OMAAT flagged.
What This Means For Travelers
Passengers planning trips between the United States and Fiji will need to route through Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO) after September 7, 2026.
Both airports offer strong domestic connectivity, and American Airlines (AA) codeshare options remain available on Fiji Airways’ (FJ) remaining U.S. services.
Fiji Airways has stated that all affected customers will be automatically rebooked onto alternative itineraries through its West Coast gateways.
