Greece’s Transport Ministry on Friday submitted a bill for public consultation that would raise fines for fare evasion on public transport in Athens and Thessaloniki, as the government seeks to curb revenue losses and improve compliance.

Under the proposed legislation, passengers caught traveling without a valid full-fare ticket on urban transport networks in Athens and Thessaloniki would face a fine of 100 euros, up from the current 72 euros. The fine for passengers entitled to a reduced-fare ticket would increase to 50 euros, from 30 euros under the current system.

The bill also provides for a 50% reduction in the fine if the violator purchases an unlimited travel card valid for at least 30 days within a deadline to be set by ministerial decision.

Public consultation will remain open until February 16.
