If you’ve planned a getaway to a new destination yourself, you know how much time and research it takes – not only choosing the right neighbourhoods and hotels, but determining how and when to travel, and what activities will create an experience that’s meaningful for you.

“It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the information out there,” says 108 Mile’s Melonie Eva, with The Travel Agent Next Door.

Eva, who grew up in Africa before moving to Canada, has spent many years travelling the world herself and helping her South Cariboo neighbours make their travel dreams come true.

“That knowledge is probably the biggest benefit of working with an experienced travel agent – we know what questions to ask to ensure your experience is tailored to your travel style, preferences, goals and budget.”

And then there’s the invaluable support when things go amiss, whether it’s a missed connection to an unforeseen attraction closure.

“If your return flight gets cancelled, I’ll find you another so you can focus on enjoying the rest of your trip. If you arrive and the hotel is dodgy, you call me and I’ll get you a new hotel,” Eva says. “If you’re visiting Thailand as a solo female traveller, I’ll put you in touch with the right driver to make sure you get around safely.”

In addition, every client receives both a detailed digital and printed copy of their itinerary, so that “every step of the way, you’ll know where you need to be and how you’re getting there.”

Better yet, that service doesn’t come at an added cost, Eva says, highlighting a common misconception. Travel agents don’t charge fees but earn a commission from the airlines, hotels and tour companies when booking, she explains.

In fact, that inside knowledge and access can be priceless. As Mexico grows pricier, for example, Eva recommends “sun destinations” like Portugal and Columbia as more affordable alternatives.

And while Africa offers amazing food and cultural experiences to pair with a “Big 5” safari, its high season mirrors our own, notes Eva, who after living in seven countries on the African continent, specializes in the destination, along with Europe, Asia and South America.

For those on a budget, or who don’t want to leave a beautiful Cariboo summer to travel – India provides an excellent alternative. Not only can you see many of the same animals – and others – in a conservation setting, you can do it for less money and during our cooler months. Add an array of cultural experiences, beautiful beaches and other activities outside the bustling cities, and you have the makings of a remarkable winter getaway.
