NEWCASTLE— A new international air link now connects Australia’s Hunter region to Southeast Asia, as Jetstar Airways (JQ) expands its network from Newcastle Airport (NTL). The newly extended service enables passengers to travel seamlessly to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) via Denpasar Bali Airport (DPS), marking a major milestone for regional aviation connectivity.

The route builds on Jetstar’s existing Newcastle–Bali service, which now operates four times weekly and continues onward to Singapore. This development enhances travel options for passengers while reducing the need to transit through major hubs such as Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD).

Jetstar Singapore Flights Expansion

Jetstar has increased its Newcastle–Bali frequency from three to four weekly flights, reflecting strong passenger demand. Each service now continues beyond Bali to Singapore, offering a one-stop connection to one of Asia’s busiest aviation hubs.

According to Australian Aviation, the inaugural flight departed Newcastle shortly after 10:15 am aboard an Airbus A321neo LR aircraft. This narrowbody jet allows the airline to operate longer routes efficiently while maintaining competitive fares.

Airline executives stated that the expansion aligns with their strategy to grow low-cost international connectivity. The new link provides passengers with greater flexibility and access to more destinations at affordable prices.

Connectivity Benefits for Passengers

The route significantly improves access for travelers across the Hunter, Central Coast, and Mid North Coast regions. Passengers can now connect through Singapore to over 170 global destinations without first traveling to larger metropolitan airports.

Local airport leadership emphasized that the service strengthens regional travel infrastructure.

The introduction of international services from Newcastle reflects a shift in passenger behavior, as more travelers seek direct access from regional centers.

The Hunter region has demonstrated strong outbound travel demand, with hundreds of thousands of passengers flying each year internationally.

Newcastle Airport is Set to Grow

The launch follows the opening of Newcastle Airport’s upgraded international terminal in 2025. This facility has enabled the airport to handle increased passenger volumes and support long-haul operations.

Airport executives stated that the success of the Bali service played a key role in enabling further expansion. Strong performance on the route has encouraged airlines to explore additional international connections.

Sunshine Coast to Singapore

Jetstar has launched a new international service linking Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY), Denpasar Bali (DPS), and Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), expanding low-cost connectivity between Australia and Asia.

The route operates three times weekly using Airbus A321neo LR aircraft, offering over 70,000 annual seats while simplifying travel with a single booking and no baggage recheck during the Bali stop.

Jetstar has commenced its inaugural service from Sunshine Coast Airport to Singapore via Bali, marking a significant step in expanding international access for the Queensland region. The first inbound flight, JQ87, arrived from Denpasar at 8:15 am, operated by aircraft VH-OYW, before departing as JQ86 at 10:20 am for the return journey.

The service operates three times per week using a 232-seat Airbus A321neo LR aircraft. This narrowbody long-range aircraft enables efficient operations on medium-haul international routes while maintaining lower operating costs, which supports Jetstar’s low-fare model.

Passengers benefit from a streamlined transit experience in Bali, with a scheduled 90-minute stop that does not require baggage collection or recheck. This setup reduces travel friction and positions the service as a practical alternative to traditional one-stop itineraries via major hubs.

Jetstar stated that the route will add more than 70,000 seats annually, targeting both outbound leisure travellers and inbound tourists. The airline emphasized affordability and convenience as key drivers behind the route’s launch.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity and Tourism

The new service enhances international accessibility for Sunshine Coast residents, reducing reliance on Brisbane Airport for long-haul travel. According to Jetstar, travellers can reach Bali significantly faster compared to the time typically required to travel to Brisbane and complete pre-departure procedures.

Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Chris Mills highlighted that the inaugural flight carried more than 200 passengers, reflecting strong initial demand. He noted that the route supports broader economic benefits by improving access for international visitors.

The connection to Singapore via Bali also opens extended global connectivity through Changi Airport, one of Asia’s primary aviation hubs. This strengthens trade, tourism, and investment opportunities for the region.

Jetstar’s Broader Bali and Singapore Strategy

This Sunshine Coast service is part of Jetstar’s broader network expansion through Bali. The airline recently launched a similar Singapore service from Newcastle, reinforcing its strategy of linking secondary Australian cities with major Asian destinations via Denpasar.

Jetstar now operates multiple routes connecting Australia to Bali, with plans to reach up to 210 weekly flights by 2026. The airline also serves Bali from key gateways, including the Gold Coast, Avalon, and Newcastle.

Singapore Changi Airport continues to expand its Australian footprint, now connected to nine cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Cairns, Newcastle, and now indirectly via Sunshine Coast.
