KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KL) is the flag carrier of the Netherlands and one of the oldest airlines still operating under its original name.

Headquartered in Amsterdam and operating primarily from Schiphol Airport, KLM runs a large European and intercontinental network across North America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

The airline is widely respected for strong pilot unions, stable contracts, and structured career progression. KLM pilots operate both short-haul and long-haul fleets, giving opportunities to move from narrow-body European flying into wide-body intercontinental operations over time.

KLM Pilot Salary

In 2026, KLM pilot salaries remain among the strongest packages in Europe. Pay is typically structured around a fixed annual salary, holiday bonus, year-end bonus, per diems, and profit-sharing in stronger financial years. This creates solid total compensation, especially for senior crews.

KLM First Officer Salary

In 2026, first officers at KLM typically earn between €80,000 and €140,000 per year in the earlier stages of their careers, depending on fleet type, seniority, and contract progression. This is approximately USD 87,000 to USD 152,000 per year. KLM uses a structured seniority-based pay system, so earnings increase steadily over time rather than fluctuating heavily with monthly flying hours.

More senior first officers can earn significantly higher totals. Experienced long-haul first officers may earn between €180,000 and €254,000 per year (approx. USD 196,000 to USD 277,000), with additional per diems, allowances, and profit-sharing in stronger years potentially increasing total compensation further. This makes KLM one of the better-paying European airlines for senior first officers.

KLM Captain Salary

Captains at KLM earn substantially more due to command responsibilities and years of accumulated seniority. In 2026, newly upgraded captains generally earn between €176,000 and €230,000 per year, which is around USD 192,000 to USD 251,000 per year depending on progression level and fleet assignment.

Senior captains, especially those with long service operating long-haul Boeing 777 or Boeing 787 aircraft, typically earn between €280,000 and €338,000 per year (approx. USD 305,000 to USD 368,000). In strong financial years, profit-sharing and allowances may push top-end total earnings even higher, with some estimates approaching €385,000 annually.
