Despite multiple “no overtaking” signs installed inside the Diamer–Bhasha Dam access tunnel, drivers continue to flout basic safety rules, turning a critical piece of national infrastructure into a high‑risk traffic trap.
A social media post highlighted that as many as ten boards inside the 3.4 km‑long tunnel clearly warn motorists not to overtake.
Yet footage from the scene shows cars and vans weaving across lanes and trying to squeeze past each other in the narrow, enclosed passage.
The tunnel serves as a strategic access route for Pakistan’s largest hydropower project, where heavy machinery, construction traffic, and public vehicles all share limited space.
In such a confined environment, any sudden stop, collision, or breakdown can quickly escalate into a serious emergency.
In the video, vehicles are seen jammed bumper-to-bumper, some at a complete standstill. Passengers, including families, have stepped out of their cars and are walking inside the tunnel, further compounding the danger.
