DALLAS– Southwest Airlines (WN) has introduced its first Boeing 737 MAX featuring brand-new RECARO cabin interiors, marking a major step in the carrier’s broader onboard refresh strategy.
The first aircraft (registration N8972S) entered service on October 16, 2025, offering upgraded seats, refreshed lighting, and power outlets at every seat — signaling the airline’s gradual shift toward a more modern travel experience.

Southwest Airlines 737 MAX Gets New Interiors
The newly delivered Boeing 737 MAX aircraft now comes equipped with RECARO’s R2 seats, designed for both efficiency and comfort. Each seat includes two power outlets (USB-A and USB-C), a personal device holder, and an adjustable headrest.
The tray tables feature dual beverage holders for convenience, while the overall layout maintains 175 seats, similar to previous configurations.
Passengers will notice a subtle distinction between standard and extra-legroom sections. The forward section offers more space and features lighter seat accents, creating a visual cue for the premium area. Southwest says the design reflects customer research focused on color psychology, comfort, and warmth.
The cabin itself introduces new lighting, patterned carpet, and deep blue tones accented with sky blue — a visual nod to the airline’s “Southwest Heart” theme. Viasat-powered Wi-Fi is available onboard, and the airline has confirmed that it will soon be complimentary for Rapid Rewards members.
This update represents the first tangible step in Southwest’s larger plan to modernize its in-flight product without completely abandoning its signature single-class cabin approach.

Partnership with RECARO
RECARO, well-known for its lightweight and ergonomic aircraft seating, partnered closely with Southwest on this project.
The R2 model was selected for its slim design, which helps improve aircraft fuel efficiency while maintaining passenger comfort.
The airline insists that feedback from both customers and crew influenced every stage of the development process — from seat padding density to lighting color temperatures.
While the seats do not include personal screens, the addition of in-seat power and device holders reflects the airline’s continued reliance on passengers’ own devices for in-flight entertainment.

Future Fleet and Retrofit Plans
Southwest confirmed that the new interiors will only appear on freshly delivered Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Older planes, including many of the 737-700s and 737-800s, will retain their current interiors, though some updates are already underway.
Between 2026 and 2027, more than half of Southwest’s Boeing 737-700s will be retrofitted with power outlets, larger overhead bins, and revised cabin spacing to create an extra-legroom section. However, the airline clarified that these retrofits won’t include the new RECARO seats.
This means that for the foreseeable future, Southwest’s fleet will feature a mix of interiors — a transitional period before consistent upgrades become visible across the network.

Bottom Line
Southwest Airlines’ new RECARO-equipped Boeing 737 MAX cabin showcases a more refined and passenger-focused direction.
The addition of modern seating, enhanced lighting, and improved cabin amenities sets a new tone for the airline’s future fleet deliveries.
Although widespread rollout will take time, the debut aircraft offers a clear preview of Southwest’s evolving in-flight experience — balancing practicality with comfort while preserving the essence of its brand.
