ABU DHABI— Etihad Airways (EY) is expanding its United States footprint with a major capacity increase across two key routes, reinforcing its long-haul network strategy.
The carrier will upgrade flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), improving connectivity between North America and fast-growing markets in Asia.
The airline will operate double-daily services between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Chicago from June 15, while Charlotte will see frequencies rise to daily operations after launching earlier in 2026.
The move strengthens Etihad’s ability to channel traffic between the United States, India, and the Asia-Pacific region via its Abu Dhabi hub.

Etihad’s Chicago Expansion
Etihad will introduce a second daily frequency to Chicago, marking a significant upgrade for one of its longest-standing U.S. routes. The increased capacity will allow passengers to access more flexible departure options and improved one-stop connections.
The route plays a key role in linking North America with high-demand destinations such as Mumbai (BOM), Delhi (DEL), and Bengaluru (BLR), alongside major Asia-Pacific cities like Bangkok (BKK) and Kuala Lumpur (KUL).
All services will be operated by the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, configured with 32 Business and 271 Economy seats, offering a consistent onboard product across both frequencies.

Charlotte Growth
Etihad will increase its Charlotte service from four weekly flights to daily operations less than three months after launch. This rapid expansion highlights strong demand in both point-to-point and connecting markets.
The route connects the southeastern United States with Etihad’s global network and supports inbound tourism and business travel. It also enhances cargo flows, an increasingly important component of long-haul route economics.
The airline plans to maintain daily operations through early September, aligning capacity with seasonal travel demand while testing long-term sustainability.

Network Connectivity
The expansion supports Etihad’s broader strategy to strengthen its Abu Dhabi hub as a transit point between continents.
Passengers will benefit from improved access to the U.S. domestic network through partner airlines, especially beyond Chicago and Charlotte.
The enhanced schedule also improves connectivity to multiple destinations across South Asia and Southeast Asia, where demand continues to rise.
This includes 11 Indian gateways, positioning the airline to capture growing travel flows between India and North America.

Bottom Line
Etihad’s phased capacity deployment reflects a measured approach to network growth, focusing on routes that show sustained demand and strong early performance.
The latest expansion underscores the airline’s confidence in the U.S. market and its role in global aviation connectivity.
